My friend Martin Eden writes and draws the fabulous and sparkly superhero comic Spandex! We bonded over various things over the years, from a love of Japanese Anime (Yay! Naruto!) and drawing hair styles, to the trials and tribulations of applying for arts council funding for our small press comics. Well Martin’s comics are no longer small press, his most recent collection of Spandex having been published by none other than Titan Books! He’s currently working up to Spandex’s big finale which is pretty exciting. My latest work in progress is a little something for him…
I can now reveal this is my contribution to Martin’s mini-fan art book Spandex Black and White! Just released with Issue 7 of Spandex at Leeds Thought Bubble Festival. Spandex is Martin’s first full-colour comic and to celebrate of its final issue he inverted the colour theme to create a collection of character portraits in striking black and white.
My character is DIVA a mysterious lesbian superhero with a racy costume and fabulous hair. I can’t reveal DIVA’s secret, but she is divine and stars seem to follow her. I figured embroidery would work well for DIVA, I aimed to give her a saintly aspect and a halo of stars! I was so pleased that Martin was happy with it. I was a bit worried that he might not ‘get it’, but he totally went for it and I was thrilled!
So, have I piqued your interest in Spandex yet? You can check it out on Martin’s official Blog here:spandex.wordpress.com
