Sometimes you gotta take some time out and do some stitching just for fun.
Jenny Hart inspired me to take up the needle and for a long time now I’ve wanted to stitch her designs on to some clothing. I’ve always loved her merging of tattoo flash and embroidery motif and this free swallow pattern from an early issue of Mollie Makes was perfect for what I had in mind.
I wanted to toughen up this summer shirt dress that always looked a little too much like a nurse’s uniform for my liking!!! By adding these swallows on the shoulders I hope to imbue it with a quirky nautical edge.
I amended the original pattern removing the ribbon from the birds’ beaks, and after stitching a version with red wing details I realised less is more and reduced the colours to simply blues and greys- with a tiny touch of yellow. Because of the fabric’s vertical stripes I opted for a heavy stem stitch and wrapped back stitch to make the design stand out. I think it worked.
Gotta say I was pretty happy with the results. Shame I have to put this little dress away now until the sun returns! Oh Summer, come back soon!!!
