Raincloud Notebook

Following on from my last post, I am indeed investigating Folksy as an avenue for online sales. I like what I’ve seen on there so far and I think this maybe a good place for me to try out having a shop front. For a start it’s based in the UK, so prices will be set in Sterling and therefore I won’t have to compensate for the US exchange rate, and postage will be cheaper as primarily I’ll be selling in the UK. I’m really looking forwards to getting this shop up and running. I’ll let you see it as soon as it’s ready.

Happy Raincloud notebook for Clare

In the meantime, I thought I’d share with you one of my recent fabric ‘makes’. It’s a little raincloud notebook that I made as a thank you gift to my lovely friend Clare. It’s a smiley raincloud, how could it be sad with all those lovely coloured drops? I bought this fabric from the City Quilter when I visited New York. The range is ‘Spring Street’, by Caroyln Gavin/Lilla Rogers Studio for P&B textiles, and I liked it so much I had to buy it in 2 different colourways. What do you think? I hope she likes it. :-)

Irish Quilting Magazine

I’m very pleased to have made it on to the pages of  the lovely Irish Quilting Magazine again with a little write up I did on the City Quilter, New York’s premier quilt shop. The City Quilter is of special interest to me as they produce their own custom New York themed fabric, that can’t be bought anywhere else! The owners Dale and Cathy were extremely kind and gave me a tour of their premises and showed me their fantastic new gallery space too. The friendly atmosphere, emphasis on education, and promotion of quilting as an Art form  make the City Quilter well worth the visit. Check it out if you are ever in New York- www.cityquilter.com

New York New York!

Along with the usual tourist activities, sight seeing Bustours and river cruises, visiting the tops of the Empire State and the Rockerfeller Buildings, visiting the amazing museums and galleries; MOMA (best gallery I’ve ever visited), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the American Museum of Natural History (where my childhood self had an absolute wig out!) We sampled cuisine of the world in Hell’s kitchen, Thai noodles and milk iced tea, Moroccan tagine and tobacco flavoured coffee, Greek kebab with fig and fennel salad, and of course American stake and fries, and Italian American pizza in Soho.

I also caught up on some personal interests; hanging out in Midtown comics at the end of our street, visiting the City Quilter and chatting to them about their own custom design New York fabrics. I bought beads in the Fashion district and scoped out make up in Macy’s and Sephora. We wandered Chinatown, and bought a bottle of TruBlood in the HBO store. And saw the Will Eisner exhibition in MOCCA, the tiny comics museum in Soho paying tribute to New York’s own master of comics.

Nights outs included a Caberet Burlesque night I will never forget at ‘Les Scandal’ on theatre row, where I met the glamorous hostess Bonnie Dunn and Guinness world record Sword Swallower Natasha Veruska (had to be seen to be believed)! And long-form improvised comedy at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade, which was hysterically good fun and featured stars from the US version of The Office, Saturday Night Live and Lutz from 30Rock! We even checked out an Irish Bar, ‘Molly Wee’s’ and the barman was from Derry. There’s nothing like getting drunk on cosmopolitans in NYC! (There’s no hangover like it either). I can’t wait till my next trip!
It’s no surprise that I took lots of photos of the city, you can see them here on flickr
